TL;DR
A Shiva Murti session lasts 45 minutes, over Google Meet or in person in Richland, Washington. It opens with a short talk about what's bothering you and a 0 to 10 rating of how much it bothers you right now. In person, I also test a few acupressure points before and after. Every session starts with grounding to settle your nervous system. Then you simply rest with your eyes closed while I do the healing work. At the end we talk about what you noticed, you rate the same thing again, and I give you a few simple aftercare suggestions. You don't need to believe anything for it to work, and you're the one who reports whether it helped.
Free guide: Healing From Home
Five energy healing practices you can start today, no experience required.
Send me the guideMost people book their first session with a picture in their head that's half massage appointment and half something they saw in a movie. Then they spend the first five minutes waiting for the strange part to start. So here's the whole thing, start to finish, so you know what you're walking into.
I've been doing energy work for about 20 years, and Shiva Murti has been my main practice for nearly two of them. The structure I use now is simple on purpose. Nothing in it asks you to believe anything, chant anything, or take off anything but your shoes if you're with me in person.
Before We Start
A session is 45 minutes. Most of mine happen over Google Meet, and the rest happen in person in Richland, Washington, at Harmonic SoulScape. The session itself is the same either way. If you're joining remotely, all you need is a quiet room, something comfortable to sit or lie on, and a phone or laptop you can prop up so we can see each other at the start and end.
You don't need to prepare anything special. Wear whatever is comfortable. If you've never done energy work before, that's fine. A lot of my clients haven't, and some of them come in fairly sure it won't do anything.
The First Few Minutes: A Short Talk
We start by talking. You tell me what's going on, whether that's a sore shoulder, a stretch of bad sleep, grief that hasn't moved, or a general sense that you're running on empty. I'm not diagnosing anything. I'm getting a clear picture of what you want help with today, in your words.
Then I ask you for a number. On a scale of 0 to 10, how much is this bothering you right now? Zero means not at all. Ten is the worst you can imagine. This is the SUDS scale, and it's the backbone of how I work. You give the number, not me, and we'll come back to it at the end.
If You're Seeing Me in Person
In-person sessions add one more check at the start. I test a few acupressure points and we note how they respond, then we test the same points again at the end. It gives you a second way to notice a shift, one you can feel with your own hands, alongside the number you report.
Grounding Comes First
Every session starts with grounding, before any healing work begins. The point is to settle your nervous system enough that your body stops bracing. A body on high alert holds on tight. A body that feels safe can let go. If you want the science behind why that order matters, I wrote about it in the Polyvagal Theory piece.
"You don't have to do anything right. You just have to let yourself rest."
The Healing Itself
This is the longest part of the session, and from your side it's the quietest. You sit or lie down with your eyes closed and rest. There's nothing to visualize and nothing to get right. If your mind wanders to your grocery list, that's fine. If you fall asleep, that's fine too, and it happens more than you'd think.
On my side, I direct the energy by holding Shiva or Shakti in mind. Those two names come from the Balinese tradition this work grows out of, and I explain what they mean in Shiva and Shakti in Healing. You don't need to share any of those beliefs for the session to do its job. Shiva Murti was developed by the Balinese High Priest Ratu Nabe and came to me through my teacher Jero Jason, and the history of the practice is there if you're curious.
People feel different things during this part. The most common are warmth, a deep heavy kind of relaxation, and emotions rising to the surface. Now and then someone feels very little. All of that is normal, and I've written a separate piece on what energy healing feels like if you want the longer version.
Coming Back: The Debrief
When the work is done, I bring you back gently. You open your eyes, take a minute, and we talk about what you noticed. Some people have a lot to say. Some just say "that was nice" and look a little dazed, which is also a fine answer.
Then I ask for your number again, for the same thing, on the same scale. This is the part I care about most. If your shoulder went from a 7 to a 2, you'll know, because you're the one who said so. If it didn't move, you'll know that too, and we'll talk honestly about what that means.
After the Session
Before we finish, I'll give you a few simple aftercare suggestions. Drink some water. Go easy on yourself for the rest of the day if you can. Pay attention over the next few days, because some changes show up later, like a better night's sleep or a pain that's quieter than usual when you wake up.
- 1A short talk about what's going on and your 0 to 10 rating.
- 2Grounding to settle your nervous system.
- 3The healing work, while you rest with your eyes closed.
- 4A debrief and your rating again.
- 5Simple aftercare for the rest of your day.
That's really all there is to it. Forty-five minutes, a number at the start, a number at the end, and you get to decide what the difference means.
